In the autumn of 1944, Canadian soldiers of the First Canadian Army played a decisive role in the liberation of Zeeland during the Battle of the Scheldt. Fighting took place in a landscape dominated by water, dikes, and open polders, where German forces had established strong defensive positions.

This walking route follows the Canadian advance through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, from Retranchement to the Brabant border. Along the route, memorials and markers commemorate the Canadian soldiers who liberated this region and the civilians who lived through occupation and combat. As the route approaches the Brabant border, it becomes part of a wider narrative. This Zeeland section forms part of a national Canadian trail, tracing the path of Canadian liberation forces across the Netherlands.
