The long-distance hiking trails displayed on our website have been developed in close partnership with the following hiking associations across Europe: Wandelnet (NL), GR Sentiers (BE), FFRandonnée (FR), and European Ramblers Association. To complete the network of trails, Liberation Route Europe also used open source data such from the Waymarked trails project. The label system used by Liberation Route follows national naming systems.
All in all, the data collected from hiking groups and projects have been carefully selected by Liberation Route Europe to follow the path Allied forces took during 1944-1945 while liberating Europe from the Nazi occupation. The hiking trails follow as closely as possible the historic routes of liberation to connect the sites of remembrance and places of historical value.
Before going on the trail, prepare a map and bring it with you. Check the weather ahead, hour by hour to avoid as much as possible unexpected surprises.
Hiking requires good shoes at least in order to walk for a long time. You can gear up according to your needs or depending on the type of terrains you are about to walk into.
Prepare for the worst possible outcome of weather, an unexpected shower can always happen. Do not forget sunglasses and a head protection from sun too.
Hiking is a continuous physical effort for your body. Staying hydrated throughout your hike is essential to avoid fainting. Bringing extra food which can be eaten on the way (Snacks, sandwiches, etc.) will help you to keep going.
Remember that the path is a shared space used between its users. Leaving no garbage after yourself and/or not damaging the environment around you is one of the key principles among hiking enthusiasts.
