Shortly after the invasion of Czechoslovakia on 15 March 1939, Hotel Slovan became headquarters for occupying German forces. After the liberation, it was transferred to the American Army to serve as its headquarters.
Following the war, the hotel was used by the Communist regime to recast the events of May 1945 and the liberation by the Americans in a negative light. In May 1952, an exhibition titled “The Shameful role of the American Occupiers in Western Bohemia” was opened in the hotel. The exhibition like the book of the same name, depicted American forces as demons that had committed many crimes as an occupying forced. American solders were portrayed as barbarians interested only in violence, illicit trade and pornography.
