The street “An St. Georg” forms the historic centre around St. George’s Church in the village Amern in North Rhine-Westphalia. During World War II, it was home to families whose lives were shaped by fear, shortages, and loss. After 1945, it became a place of a collective new beginning.

The street “An St. Georg” is one of the oldest and most historically significant areas of Schwalmtal-Amern. It takes its name from the nearby Church of St. George, which has served as the village’s spiritual and social centre since the late Middle Ages. Over centuries, religious, economic, and communal life developed around this street.

During World War II, “An St. Georg” remained home to many local families. Behind the façades of the houses, everyday life was marked by air raids, shortages, billeting of Wehrmacht soldiers in civilian houses, and constant concern for relatives at the front. Although large-scale destruction was avoided, the war deeply affected the village community and left lasting emotional scars. The church and its surroundings offered a sense of stability and support during a time of fear and uncertainty.

After 1945, the village Amern entered a period of cautious recovery. Familiar places such as “An St. Georg” became symbols of continuity and renewal as communal life slowly returned. In the decades that followed, the village evolved while preserving its historic layout.

As part of the village renewal programme in the 1980s, many buildings along the street were carefully restored, resulting in the harmonious, almost museum-like appearance seen today. At the same time, the street remains a lively cultural space. Events such as the Advent Christmas market or the French market celebrating the partnership with the village Ganges in Southern France link remembrance with cultural exchange and community life.

Today, “An St. Georg” represents resilience and remembrance - a place where the village’s wartime experiences and post-war renewal remain part of its identity.
