After Koewacht, the neighbouring village of Heikant was the second place in Zeeland to be liberated by the First Polish Armoured Division. On 16 September 1944, Polish soldier Ludwik Gorecki was killed during a battle for the bridge near the hamlet of Kijkuit. He fought under the pseudonym Ludwik Wieczorek and was buried in Heikant cemetery. He was later reburied on the Axel Field of Honour.

During the war, little else happened in Heikant. In 1943, flaxter Charel van den Brande was shot by a German border guard during a smuggling attempt. To commemorate the two war victims, a memorial was erected on the right side of Heikant Catholic Church in 2019. The monument was created by sculptor Ronny Ivens and adopted by the pupils of Heidepoort primary school.
