On 17 September 1944, Operation Market Garden began. The Betuwe too was hit by relentless fighting and bombing. Near hamlet 't Looveer, where there was a ferry across the Rhine, a bombing raid took place.
Allied planes mistakenly hit an air raid shelter with fleeing civilians. More than half of the 23 victims were children. Firefighter Antoon Tonk lost his life while helping people.
Many victims of the bombing are buried in the Mass Grave at Huissen-Stad Cemetery. A modest gathering with flower-laying takes place there every year.
