This American Sherman tank was destroyed during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944 to 45. It is now a lasting memorial to the troops who served in the 2nd and 3rd US Armoured Division during the German offensive.
This Sherman tank took a direct hit during the battle in the Ardennes, killing the entire crew. The damage inflicted to the tank can be seen from the front, where the German round penetrated its armour. The round would have continued into the tank where the crew were positioned.
The plaque on the front of the memorial reads:
‘In honor of the gallant soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd US Armored Divisions who liberated our towns and its villages in January 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge.
M4A1 Sherman tank (76mm gun) restored and put in position by the Belgian “1/3 Régiment de Lanciers” (Cavalry Regiment)
