The Canadians reach the Bolwerk bridge in Appingedam on Monday 23 April 1945. The shooting stopped for a while. Three Germans appear with their hands up. One of them yells "Don't shoot, Comrade" at a Canadian soldier. One of the three turns out to be the local Ortskommandant.

The Germans have entrenched themselves in houses on the Bolwerk. Part of the bridge has been blown up, but it is still possible for the Canadian soldiers to cross. German soldiers make new attempts to destroy the bridge, but they fail as they are under close fire from the Canadians. One of the Germans – nervous – starts to cry.

The Canadians advance along the Wierde and enter the houses where they eliminate the German positions. The liberators allow the Germans to remove their wounded. Then the shooting starts again. More and more German soldiers are tired of fighting. An SS officer orders a counter-attack, but is shot from behind by one of his men.

Three Germans cross the bridge over the Grote Heek with their hands up. One of them yells "Don't shoot, Comrade" at a Canadian soldier. They are searched and taken to the Groene Kruis building on the Westersingel. One of the three turns out to be the local Ortskommandant. With the surrender of the Ortscommandant of Appingedam, the liberation was almost a fact.
