Cycling through the former municipality of Maasbracht means crossing a landscape that, in the autumn and winter of 1944-1945, lay for months on the fragile line between occupation and liberation. After the liberation of South Limburg in September 1944, the Allied advance came to a halt at the Meuse. What was meant to be a brief pause turned into a drawn-out war of position that would last well into the spring of 1945.
For the residents of villages such as Wessem, Beegden, Heel, Panheel, Linne and Montfort, this meant a period of uncertainty, evacuation and destruction. Thousands of people were forced to leave their homes, sometimes within hours, and found shelter out of necessity with family or strangers. Those who stayed behind lived among minefields, shelling and the constant threat of bombing.
This cycling route, connecting nine locations, takes you past locks, river crossings, a war memorial and a mass grave. Along the way you will hear about British and American soldiers who dug in for months just one canal's width from the enemy, about bargemen who watched their ships go up in smoke, and about villages that were left completely empty. Together, these stories show just how far from self-evident the liberation of this corner of Limburg really was.
