Stanley Green was arrested in January 1944 and sentenced to six months' imprisonment for failure to hand in a radio and cameras — both forbidden items. However, those items belonged to two of his employees, Combes and Torpy, who had been caught listening to the radio. As Stanley was their boss, he was given the harsher sentence. Combes was also put in Jersey Prison, which gave him Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder afterwards.

Stanley was kept in Jersey jail until he was deported to France on 1 March — he was sent first to Saint-Lô Prison for ten days and then to Fort de Villeneuve-Saint-Georges Prison, where he spent four months. While in Villeneuve, his weight went down to 62kg from 86kg.

Despite his appeal for release on 1 June 1944, Stanley was sent to Fresnes Prison near Paris, where he witnessed and experienced torture. He arrived at Buchenwald concentration camp on 20 August after a five- or six-day journey in a cattle truck shared with 97 others. Before being moved to a cell block, Stanley slept in the open for six weeks on heaps of stone; barefoot, bareheaded, and without any covering. At nights it was bitterly cold and it often rained. Stanley later contracted dysentery and had five teeth broken off when hit by an SS guard with his rifle butt. Sometimes he attempted to console himself with prayer, squatting on the floor covered with a blanket.

Eventually, Stanley managed to get a letter out of the camp to his son Leslie at Laufen internment camp, Germany. Leslie and the camp senior, Guernseyman Ambrose Sherwill, effected his transfer, and he arrived on 10 January 1945. It was thanks to this move that he survived the war and was able to return to Jersey with his son. Stanley was later reunited with his former employees Torpy and Combes.
