Founded in 1966 by former resistance fighters, deportees, and teachers from Isère, the museum traces the local history of World War II through the events and experiences of the region, placed within their broader context.

The Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation de l’Isère is located at 14 rue Hébert in Grenoble. It became a departmental museum in 1994 and is part of a historical and educational mission focused on the local realities of the war. The street is named in honor of Jacques Hébert, a Grenoble resistance fighter executed by the Germans in 1943 for his opposition to the Nazi occupier.

The museum offers a permanent exhibition organized around five themes: entering the resistance, the maquis, the situation of Jews in Grenoble and Isère between 1939 and 1945, repression, and the Liberation. These themes are illustrated by a rich collection of objects, photographs, archival documents, and audio testimonies, providing a chronological narrative of local history, from the causes of the conflict to its consequences.

The museum hosts two temporary exhibitions each year, exploring various aspects of the Resistance, Deportation, or Human Rights. A documentation center and an educational space are also available. These resources complement the permanent exhibition and make the museum a place for preserving, researching, and transmitting the history of World War II in Isère.

The visit helps visitors understand how the Resistance was organized in the department, based on individual and collective choices made during the Occupation. The exhibition also highlights the mechanisms of repression, persecution, deportation, and the suffering endured by those who resisted or were targeted by occupation policies.

Finally, the museum addresses the civic significance of this history, going beyond the mere recounting of events. It explores how societies pass on the memory of the Resistance, Deportation, and Liberation, as well as the values associated with these commitments.
