Marshal Mannerheim’s Saloon Car is one of Mikkeli’s most evocative wartime sites. Standing at Mikkeli railway station, the wooden railway carriage offers a rare glimpse into the mobile command environment of Finland’s wartime Commander-in-Chief, Marshal C. G. E. Mannerheim.

The A90-type official carriage was introduced in 1930 and later served as Mannerheim’s personal sleeping car. During the war years, it was often attached to the Defence Command’s train, but it could also travel with ordinary passenger trains. From Mikkeli Headquarters, Mannerheim used the carriage for journeys to Helsinki for negotiations with the Finnish government and for visits to different areas of the front. Altogether, he travelled more than 78,000 kilometres in the carriage during the war years.

Inside, the carriage contains a saloon, five sleeping cabins with eight beds in total, a kitchen and a lavatory. In addition to the Marshal, the carriage could accommodate members of his closest military staff, including senior generals and his adjutant when required. The preserved interior reflects both practical wartime travel and the status of the Commander-in-Chief.

Mannerheim used the carriage for the last time in January 1946, when he was serving as President of the Republic of Finland. After the war, the carriage continued in official and charter use before it was later restored and moved to Mikkeli railway station in 1992.

Today, the saloon car is maintained by Mikkeli City Museums. It is open to the public only once a year, on 4 June, Mannerheim’s birthday and the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces.
