Mekrijärvi schoolhouse is a product of 1920s classicism. Construction began in 1923 and the building was completed the following year. In the late summer 1944, a unit under command of Lieutenant Lauri Törni (later known as Larry Thorne), billeted in the schoolhouse.

In August 1944, during the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944, a unit under the command of Lieutenant Lauri Törni, Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, arrived in Ilomantsi from Tolvajärvi. They were on a one-week special mission. On 12 August 1944, Törni's unit set up billets in the schoolhouse. During the stay, Törni came down with jaundice.

After the Continuation war, Törni’s company marched from Hattuvaara toward Eno and spent the night of 16 to 17 October 1944 in the schoolhouse once again.

Military use caused a lot of wear and tear to the schoolhouse, therefore a school board inspector recommended extensive restoration in 1946. This was, however, delayed until 1954. The project included exterior painting and the installation of electrical wiring. Plumbing and sewer pipelines were installed in 1962.

The property is currently privately owned. The building provides tourism-related services for large groups by advance reservation.
