Return from Buchenwald

The German army finally surrendered in May 1945. The few Jews, Roma and political prisoners who survived the concentration camps returned home.

One of them was Father Janssens from St.-Jozef-Olen, who had been arrested by the German secret police for unknown reasons and deported to the notorious Buchenwald camp in Germany in the summer of 1944. He received a joyous welcome on his return to his parish.

Not all of the almost 30 political prisoners from Olen were as fortunate. More than half did not survive the war, dying in the concentration camps or during the notorious death marches deeper into the besieged Germany.
